Mirror images of childhood

Little snippets of childhood memories surface every once in a while, maybe a dozen times in ten years. But there is a great danger that they will disappear again and again and that is why you try to cling them and hold them tight. Sewing and gluing the scraps makes them more durable.

“Her work serves as a reflection on the complexities of her Vietnamese and German identity, a narrative marked by the dance of being torn between two distinct cultures. In her most recent work, "Mirror Images of Childhood," Trà Mi delves into the intimate recesses of her own childhood memories and of ancestral rituals, which slowly fading among the younger generation.

For the exhibition in Gategate Gallery, Trà Mi envision to create a site-specific installation, in order to extend the narrative of „Mirror Images of Childhood“. Here the Installation enables visitor to partake and recall the memories centred around the important element of Vietnamese gathering culture – dinner. For Trà Mi, whose understanding of Vietnamese culture largely stems from her parents and the diaspora, this work holds a deeply intimate significance.”
