present

I am a Vietnamese-German artist based in Leipzig, Germany.

I am currently back again to Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, where I started studying in the department for plastic/ceramic art in 2018, to finish my diploma.

In 2023, I was a guest student at UMPRUM Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Czech Republic in the applied art department for ceramics and porcelain until February 2024. This time was particularly significant for me as I embarked on a journey to explore my roots, inspired by the history of my parents who came from Vietnam to the EU over Czechoslovakia as guest workers.

I mainly work with materials such as porcelain, build sculptures out of stoneware, design tableware and often employing the airbrush technique. My cultural background and my experiences as a Vietnamese living and growing up in Germany have a huge influence on my works. Through my installations, I strive to capture many memories and reconstruct my own utopian world by bringing together the differences and similarities of my entcounters.

In addition to my studies, I work as a freelancer in our shared workshop in Leipzig.

My dog Moku has been accompanying me since 2020.

“Leaving the layer of somatic meanings, Trami Nguyen seeks for "roots" within herself. Born and raised between two distinct cultures, she experiences „being Vietnamese" through the Vietnamese diaspora. For Trami, the homeland is something always close yet seemingly distant. When pottery becomes her artistic language, Trami gradually creates works that reconstruct faded images in her memory of Vietnam. The images and colours linger from the last visit to family when she was just a child. However, small everyday objects, once overlooked, are now moulded into shapes, fired, and then overlaid and compressed together. Ordinary, scattered objects, like a cup or a less noticed arrow, seem to find a familiar place in her mind.”  - Curator Nam Nguyen

past

Before I started studying, I received a training (2015 - 2018) at the ceramic school in Landshut to become a potter. From throwing, structural ceramics, building models, to theories and manual skills, everything was part of the training. I’m so grateful for the experiences during this time, the knowledge I got and still get from my masters and ceramic friends.

From 2012 to 2015 I attended an artistic technical college in Munich (Fachoberschule für Gestaltung München). At a school-internship I’ve had my first encounter with ceramics and soon after I applied for the apprenticeship in Landshut.

I was born in 1994 in Dachau close to Munich, Germany.
